Open-source licences

The short version

  • SeaNama's own code is licensed under the Mozilla Public License 2.0.
  • It's built on many open-source projects, listed below with their licences. Thank you to everyone who makes them.
  • Some of those projects are under the GPL or LGPL. If you received a SeaNama app, you're entitled to its source code, and section 2 says how to get it.

1. SeaNama

Copyright © 2026 SeaNama contributors. SeaNama is licensed under the Mozilla Public License, version 2.0. The full licence text is at mozilla.org/MPL/2.0.

2. Getting the source code

SeaNama is in beta, and its source code will be published openly when it leaves beta.

Until then, anyone who has received a SeaNama app or instance from us or from an instance operator can ask for its complete corresponding source code: SeaNama's own code, and the source of the GPL and LGPL components it contains, in the exact versions used to build it. Write to [email protected] and say which app and version you have. We'll provide it at no charge beyond the cost of delivering it. This offer is valid for at least three years after we last distribute that version.

The FFmpeg source for the Android apps is attached to every SeaNama release from 0.11.0 on as ffmpeg-7.1.5.tar.xz (SHA-256 de668509caf9e35e3cd162473441fdb29538c6d96ed080292b3cf9e6fc5d558f), the same file as ffmpeg.org/releases/ffmpeg-7.1.5.tar.xz.

Each app also lists every component, with its licence and copyright and the licence's full text, under Settings → About → Licences.

3. Main components

These are the parts that matter most, by where they're used.

In every app

  • React, React DOM, React Router: MIT. Meta Platforms, Inc. and contributors; Remix Software Inc.
  • JASSUB: subtitle rendering in the browser player. JASSUB itself is MIT; it contains libass (ISC), FriBidi (LGPL-2.1-or-later), HarfBuzz (MIT), FreeType (used under the FreeType License) and other libraries under Zlib, BSL-1.0 and similar licences. Portions of this software are copyright © The FreeType Project (freetype.org). All rights reserved.
  • rvfc-polyfill: GPL-3.0. Used by JASSUB for frame timing.
  • jsQR: Apache-2.0. Reads invite QR codes.
  • Inter: SIL Open Font License 1.1. Copyright © 2016 The Inter Project Authors (Rasmus Andersson).
  • Vazirmatn: SIL Open Font License 1.1. Copyright © 2015 The Vazirmatn Project Authors (Saber Rastikerdar).
  • Bricolage Grotesque: SIL Open Font License 1.1. Copyright © 2022 The Bricolage Grotesque Project Authors.
  • Fontsource packaging: MIT.
  • GNU FriBidi, inside JASSUB: LGPL-2.1-or-later. Its source is at github.com/fribidi/fribidi, and the exact source of the copy in the apps is available as described in section 2.

Windows, macOS, Linux and Android apps

  • Tauri and its Rust and JavaScript libraries: MIT or Apache-2.0.
  • Over 500 Rust crates, almost all under MIT, Apache-2.0, or both; the full list is below.

Windows app

  • libmpv (mpv): the video player. The build SeaNama ships comes from mpv-winbuild-cmake and is licensed under the GPL, because it includes FFmpeg built with GPL components such as x264, x265, Rubber Band and davs2, alongside libass, HarfBuzz, FreeType and others. The source for the exact build is available as described in section 2. The build is mpv v0.41.0-1012-ge8673660a from shinchiro/mpv-winbuild-cmake, made with mpv's GPL option; with its Apache-2.0 parts (shaderc, SPIRV-Cross) the library as shipped is under GPL version 3.

Android app

  • AndroidX Media3 (ExoPlayer) and its FFmpeg extension: Apache-2.0. The Android Open Source Project.
  • FFmpeg 7.1.5 (ffmpeg.org): LGPL-2.1-or-later. Plays Dolby, DTS and TrueHD sound. SeaNama builds it itself, unmodified, as shared libraries with only the audio decoders it uses and no GPL or non-free parts; the source is on each release beside the app and as described in section 2, and the build script is in SeaNama's repository.

Instance software and the one-command install

  • The SeaNama instance runs on Node.js (MIT) and uses no other npm packages at run time.
  • The one-command install downloads these unmodified from their publishers and runs them beside SeaNama: AIOStreams (AGPL-3.0), AIOMetadata (GPL-3.0), Caddy (Apache-2.0) and, if chosen, cloudflared (Apache-2.0). Their source is available from their own projects.
  • FFmpeg in the SeaNama server image: Alpine Linux's package, unmodified, which Alpine declares GPL-2.0-or-later AND LGPL-2.1-or-later. It converts sound a browser cannot play. Its source is Alpine's (aports) and is available as described in section 2.
  • Redis, the metadata addon's cache: the image Redis publishes, under the licence of that version.

Data an instance reads

  • Anime id mappings from Fribb/anime-lists, which links MyAnimeList, AniDB, AniList, Kitsu, IMDb, TMDB and TVDB ids. It draws on anime-offline-database (Open Database License 1.0; its contents under the Database Contents License 1.0) and Anime-Lists. An instance downloads the list itself; SeaNama does not ship it.
  • Anime catalogues from AniList's public API, used under its terms of use. SeaNama is not affiliated with AniList.
  • Anime scores from MyAnimeList's API. SeaNama is not affiliated with MyAnimeList.
  • Titles, artwork and details from TMDB, through the metadata addon. This product uses TMDB and the TMDB APIs but is not endorsed, certified, or otherwise approved by TMDB.
  • Ratings from IMDb's datasets, through the metadata addon. Information courtesy of IMDb (https://www.imdb.com). Used with permission.
  • Watch history and list sync through Trakt's API, and opening and ending times for anime from AniSkip. SeaNama is not affiliated with either.
